10 Top Tips on What to Wear for Your Autumn Family Photoshoot

It’s my absolute favourite season of all! The air takes on that lovely autumn chill (okay not that bit), and leaves transform into the most gorgeous colours of red, yellow, gold, brown and crimson (this is my favourite part!)

It’s the season for cosy jumpers, mugs of warm cocoa, and adventures of rustling through and throwing leaves. Oh that noise of running through leaves!

The images you make now will become heirlooms your family will treasure for generations.

Choosing outfits for your family photoshoot may seem daunting at first, but it’s part of the fun.

It’s a chance to reflect upon your family’s unique story.

Please forget “perfect” and embrace authentic!

This is about the laughter, the little squeezes, the real connections you share. Together let’s explore how you can create beautiful, cohesive looks inspired by the spirit and colours of fall.

Bringing Autumn’s Warmth into Your Wardrobe

The true charm of autumn lies in its earthy, gentle, warm and rich tones. All these shades of rust, plum, mustard, olive, buttery cream, caramel, deep green, and soft rose are warm colours and make your photos even more beautiful.

Dressing the Family: Simple Tips for an Effortless Fall Look

1. Start planning your family’s outfits early

Start to plan your outfits a few weeks in advance. You don’t want to realise the day before the session that your kids have outgrown their favourite outfits or that you don’t feel so comfortable in your favourite jumper anymore.

2. Consider the location

If you are venturing into the forest or the mountains, your clothes might look more casual than when you have a fall session in the city.

3. Choose a colour palette

Choose 4-5 colours that complement each other and try to match everyone’s clothes to these colours only. Try to stay away from black and bright white.

4. Let one outfit take the lead

Start with your own outfit first. If you have a dress, jumper, or accessories you love, start there. Use those colours and textures as inspiration, then build everyone else’s looks around them.

5. Dress for the same weather and location

Make sure that everyone is wearing fall clothes that match the location and that not one person is short-sleeved and the other in a thick coat.

6. Mix and layer

Layering is perfect for unpredictable weather. Think cosy knits, scarves, woollen hats, corduroy trousers, textured jumpers, boots and soft, flowing dresses. Play with layers and different lengths. Adding layers will also give you the opportunity to take some layers off(such as a cardigan) for different looks.

7. Blend, don’t match

Aim for outfits that coordinate, but aren’t identical. You don’t all have to wear blue jeans and cream jumpers. Choose the colours from your colour palette that work together.

8. Avoid logos and busy patterns

Large logos and patterns distract the viewers eye and draw our attention away from the love and warmth between you.

9. Add thoughtful accessories

Scarves, beanies, boots, and cardigans not only provide warmth but also introduce movement and texture. Little details like these add such charm and can make the whole shoot feel even more playful and natural.

10. Don’t forget about planning your footwear too

Brown boots, leather shoes, cream or neutral shoes work well. If possible, try to avoid white sneakers or black shoes. But bear in mind the location (you can always bring a change of shoes).

But above all, prioritise comfort. Choose outfits and shoes that feel good. When you and your children are comfortable, it naturally shows in the photos. We want real smiles and genuine laughter.

Flexibility is key

Autumn can be delightfully unpredictable.

So be ready for sunshine, crisp air, or even an unexpected drizzle. Layers make it a breeze to adapt.

If you’re heading to the mountains or a favourite park, consider bringing changes for everyone. You might get a little muddy or wet from throwing leaves around, so we want to make sure no-one gets cold on the way home.

And if anyone insists on bringing a favourite teddy or raincoat, embrace it. It may not fit perfectly into your colour scheme, but these honest moments are part of your family’s story.
