The best outfits for family photos at your home

Capturing your family in the space where you create your daily memories is so special

Family photos at home offer a unique intimacy that studio sessions simply can’t replicate: you freeze time in the very rooms where your children take their first steps, have pillow fights, and snuggle up to for bedtime stories.

Whether you’re welcoming a newborn or celebrating another year of family adventures, home photography sessions create a beautiful record of your life as it truly is. These sessions are perfect for families with newborns and little ones who feel most comfortable in familiar surroundings—or for any family, really. I often combine at-home and outdoor locations for my family photo sessions.

Why Choose Family Photos at Home?

Indoor family photos capture the essence of your family’s story. Your home becomes part of the narrative, showing future generations where their story began. These sessions are ideal for new parents, as they eliminate the stress of travelling with a tiny baby still adjusting to the world.

Also, indoors, we can record tiny little details like chubby baby toes, little hands grasping favourite toys, siblings reading together in their bedroom, and the whole family jumping on the bed together.

These everyday moments become extraordinary when viewed through the lens of time. Your children will treasure seeing their childhood rooms, their beloved teddy bears, and the cosy corners where they felt safest.

Also, home sessions offer the opportunity to preserve very special moments like the whole family making pancakes together in the kitchen. And splashing a little flour can add so much fun!

Choosing the Perfect Outfits for Your Indoor Session

Comfort is Queen

The most important factor for me is always making sure that you all feel comfortable and authentic. Don’t buy clothes that ‘fit the occasion’ but are not really you. If you feel uncomfortable it will show in the photos – in the way you engage, look, or move around.

Let’s talk about Colours

One way of creating a wonderful look is selecting clothes that complement your space: subtle, natural colours that harmonise with your home’s décor. Soft creams, gentle greys, warm beiges, and muted pastels create a cohesive look that won’t date your photographs.

For newborn family photos, these gentle hues are particularly flattering, creating a serene backdrop that allows your baby’s delicate features to shine.

Or, if your home is rather colourful, embrace the bold colours and repeat them in your clothing.

What to Avoid

I always suggest to steer clear of busy patterns like stripes or checks, which can be distracting in photographs. Large logos or bright, contrasting colours can pull focus away from the faces and the beautiful connections between family members.

Having said that, if your daughter’s favourite dress has a large Paw Patrol puppy on its front, or your favourite skirt has big dots all over, then of course you should wear it. After all, comfort is the most important ingredient for harmonious photos.

The Sweet Details Matter

Here’s a my (not so) secret: bare feet are absolutely beautiful in family photos, especially for children. Those tiny feet that have never been walked on or those chunky little toes add such sweetness to images. So if possible, skip the socks, choose the leggings over the tights and let those precious feet show.

The same applies to adults: photos in socks don’t look great (even if you don’t like your feet), and photos indoors with shoes don’t work either.

For newborns, also consider outfits that don’t cover their feet. There’s nothing quite like capturing those perfect little toes that you’ll miss so much as they grow.

Making the Most of Multiple Looks

One wonderful advantage of shooting at home is the opportunity to change outfits more easily during your session.

Consider having a mix of dressy and casual options ready. Perhaps start with your most coordinated look whilst everyone’s fresh and energy levels are high and then transition to comfortable play clothes as the session progresses and the children become more relaxed.

You could even finish your session in pyjamas for those cosy bedtime story moments.

Creating Lasting Memories

The most beautiful aspect of family photos at home is how naturally they capture your family’s authentic spirit. When you’re in your own space, surrounded by the things you love, genuine emotions flow more freely.

The result? Photographs that truly reflect who you are as a family.

These aren’t just photos that will sit on a hard drive. They’re memories meant to be displayed proudly on your walls and treasured in beautiful albums.

Imagine your children, years from now, looking through these images and remembering not just how they looked, but how loved they felt in these familiar spaces.

Your family’s story deserves to be told beautifully, and there’s no better backdrop than the home where you’re writing it together.

With the right preparation and clothing choices, your indoor family photos will become treasured heirlooms that capture this precious chapter of your lives.
