How to keep family photos fun when your child isn’t in the mood

A Zurich family photo session, a little girl, and an unexpected turn

A family photography session truly is a rainbow of emotions. It’s about capturing the love, the connection, and the unique story that belongs only to you.

Sometimes, those stories take an unexpected turn, leading to moments of pure, unplanned fun. This is what happened during a recent photoshoot in Zurich with a wonderful family about to embark on a new chapter.

They were moving away from this beautiful city, a place that held so many of their memories. They wanted to capture their life here one last time: the cobblestone streets, the river Limmat, the Grossmunster, the views of the mountains in the distance, the feeling of home.

Photos are the perfect way to bottle up those feelings – tangible memories you can hold onto forever. An album is a wonderful gift for your children to flip through years from now. A story of their childhood they may not remember but can always return to.

When your photographer needs to be creative

Every parent knows that children operate on their own time and their own terms. That’s also what most parents worry about when booking a photo session.

Six-year-old Lucy was full of smiles and energy. We started our session at Zürihorn, running up and down the pier. We laughed a lot, capturing beautiful moments of her holding her parents’ hands and giggling with them.

Once we had moved on, exploring the old town Zurich, her patience began to wane. The excitement faded, she seemed to be done. She didn’t want any more photos.

In these moments, there’s a choice.

You can push, which often leads to tears and stress, or you can implement.

My entire philosophy is built on creating an experience that feels like a wonderful day out with your family, completely free of stress. A family opening their life to me is a privilege, and the core of my work is built on the trust that we create together.

The last thing I ever want is for a child to feel pressured or unhappy.

So, seeing Lucy’s reluctance, I decided to try something different. I knelt down to her level and offered her one of my cameras (luckily, I always carry two cameras with me). Omg, you cannot imagine her joy and excitement!

A new photographer in town

Her eyes lit up instantly. A real camera! She took it carefully, her small fingers wrapping around the body of the camera as she looked through the viewfinder.

The change was immediate. Her mood shifted from resistant to completely engaged. She started taking photos of everything, but especially of me, taking photos:)

It was a beautiful and funny sight. Her parents watched, breaking into wide, relaxed smiles. The tension of a potentially stressful situation had completely melted away. Instead, we were all sharing in this spontaneous, joyful moment. Lucy wasn’t just participating; she was leading the fun. She took dozens of wonderful, creative, and heartfelt photos.

The funniest part? When it was time to move on, she didn’t want to give the camera back! She had found her calling 🙂 We gently negotiated its return, and with her spirits lifted, she was happy to be back in front of the camera with her family for a few more cherished shots.

Trust, joy, and timeless memories

This little moment with Lucy is everything I want my family sessions to be.

It’s about more than just taking pictures.

It’s about creating an experience.

It’s about having fun and ensuring that every single person, from the youngest to the oldest, feels comfortable and happy.

Lucy’s parents were so happy. They told me afterwards how much they appreciated that we didn’t just end the session when she became tired. They were thrilled that we found a way to not only continue but to create an even more memorable and unique story for their family album. They saw that I was not just there to get the perfect shot, but to ensure their family had a genuinely good time.

And this is my promise to you. When you book a session with me, you are not just hiring a photographer. You are entrusting me with your family’s precious moments. My job is to handle all the details so you can simply enjoy the experience. Whether we’re exploring the Alpine mountain trails, strolling through Zurich, or snuggling on your couch at home, the goal is always authentic joy.

Don’t worry about tears, tantrums, or tired kiddos – I’ve got it all covered 🙂
