Family photo sessions are more than just images on a wall. Theyâre telling the story of your family, the connections, the love, and the laughter that define you as a family. Working with me is not about stiff poses and smiles on command – itâs about authenticity, fun and lots of tender moments.
Being in front of a camera can feel awkward. Most people feel like that. But here are some great activities you can do during your photo session to overcome hesitations and insecurities, so that we capture natural, heartwarming images that feel like you.
1. Take a Walk Together
The first few moments of a photoshoot can sometimes feel a little awkward, with everyone settling in and figuring out how to act in front of the camera. One of the easiest ways to shake off that initial shyness is to start walking together as a family.
Hold hands, stroll naturally, and enjoy a bit of movement. You might walk toward the camera, then away from it, looking at each other and chatting along the way. Recall a funny memory that makes everyone laugh or point out something interesting to look at together. Walk slowly, run, ot stop to twirl around together.
These simple interactions create beautiful, candid shots and help everyone relax.
2. Share a Secret or Tell a Joke
Nothing sparks genuine reactions like an intimate whisper or a hearty giggle. Lean in and tell your children a playful secret or a silly joke. It’s not what you say but their priceless reactions that shine in the photo. Watch their eyes light up or their faces transform with laughter.
For adults, this trick works wonders too. Whisper something sweet, or share an inside joke with your partner. It might even be something cheeky! These moments encapsulate that unique bond you share, making your photos look naturally warm and connected.

3. Play and Be Active
Forget posing entirely – family fun is where the magic happens. Bring along a family-favourite activity, such as a ball, a scooter, or even a pet. If your children love a particular toy, bring it along. Run, play, pick flowers, or carry the kids and spin them around.
Blow bubbles, hunt for pretty leaves, or share a game of hide and seek under the trees. Maybe you build sandcastles together, let kites fly, or break into a mini dance party right in the park (yes, Iâve seen this happen!). Have a picnic or splash through puddles.
Every interaction during play brings out laughter, big smiles, joy and that special connection you have thatâs impossible to replicate with formal poses.
Itâs the raw, unscripted energy that will make these pictures special.

4. Hold On Tight for Hugs and Kisses
There is nothing like a hug or a kiss to create tenderness. Whether itâs a bear hug with everyone piled in or a soft kiss on the forehead, these moments speak volumes about your bond as a family.
Encourage kids to hug Mum or Dad from behind or stand on tiptoes to plant a kiss. Do different combinations for a variety of photos: kids with Mum, kids with Dad, or everyone together.
Parents can share tender moments too. A surprise snuggle or head nestled together makes for intimate, heartwarming images youâll treasure forever.
5. Make a Family Train
Invite everyone to line up, hold hands and walk sideways, just like making your own little family train. Wiggle, giggle, and chug along together. Move slowly or let the energy carry you into a gentle run!
This playful activity is guaranteed to spark laughter and joy, bringing out those wonderfully honest smiles and the togetherness you want to remember. Whether itâs the little onesâ delighted squeals or the shared goofy moments, a family train makes for dynamic, fun-filled photos that celebrate your unique bond.
6. Bring Meaningful Props or Heirlooms
Sometimes, the sweetest touch comes from something small like a cherished teddy bear, a favourite blanket, or a book you read together every night.
Incorporating beloved toys, keepsakes, or even family heirlooms into your shoot weaves your family history into every image. Imagine a grandparentâs quilt draped over little shoulders, or tiny hands holding that one stuffed animal they never let go of. These little details make your photos even more personal and create a bridge between generations. Something you and your children will treasure for years.

7. Let the Kids Be
Children have a way of bringing magic to family photos simply by being themselves. 100% true!
Donât worry if your kids get a bit messy or donât follow your plan perfectly. Thatâs where the real family story begins. Whether itâs their wild hair or cheeky moments, these elements make your family photos unique and full of personality.
Avoid pressuring kids to behave or smile âperfectly.â Instead, focus on creating a relaxed environment where they feel safe and happy to express themselves. If your child sticks out their tongue or gives a cheeky grinâembrace it! These silly moments often become favourites.
Most importantly, donât get stressed yourself. If your child is having an uncooperative moment, let them be. Kids will (almost) always come around. We just give them space to express their feelings and go with the flow. HERE is an example of a family session in which the boy had one of those moments, and we dealt with it.
So, trust your photographer and relax. Remember, the playful, spontaneous shots will likely be the ones you adore the most in years to come. After all, even if we capture your little oneâs tantrum, that was their personality at the time, right? And youâll be able to laugh about it one day đ
Capturing Memories That Last a Lifetime
Family photography is about creating much more than images â itâs about creating unforgettable memories that bring your family closer together. By focusing on natural interactions and fun experiences, youâll end up with photos that arenât just beautiful but also deeply meaningful.
Imagine your children in many years to come being able to hold onto those memories, treasuring the love and affection of their parents.
If youâve been dreaming of capturing your familyâs love and connection with professional portraits, now is the perfect time. Because there is never a perfect time, so now is as perfect as any time!
